Manhandling the Brain

MANHANDLING THE BRAIN: Psychiatric Neurosurgery in the Mid-20th Century

2016 marks 75 years since the first UK pre-frontal leucotomy, a procedure introduced in Portugal in 1935. Over the next 30 years around 70,000 people with mental health problems were operated on. This art/historical project explores these events, alongside their healthcare and academic context.

Outcomes have included oral presentations, an essay, and an art/archive installation at the Library and Archive of the Institute of Neurology, London, from 22nd June to the 23rd September 2016 (https://twitter.com/neurolib), and then at the Royal Society of Medicine Library, 1 Wimpole Street, London, until 4th January 2017.
